A New Maize Mill Brings Hope and Opportunity to a Community in Malawi
Circle J Ministries is celebrating an exciting milestone in Malawi: the opening of a new maize mill near Mitundu, just outside Lilongwe in the country's Central Region.
This project represents more than a place to grind maize. It is an opportunity to help address hunger, support local families, and create resources for future agricultural and feeding programs.
Meeting an Everyday Need
Maize is a staple crop in Malawi and an essential part of daily life. Once ground into flour, it is used to prepare nsima, a traditional dish that serves as a primary source of food for many Malawian families.
For families in rural communities, accessing a maize mill can mean traveling several kilometers to have their grain processed.
The new Circle J Ministries maize mill is located behind United Baptist Church, approximately four kilometers from Mitundu. By bringing milling services closer to the surrounding community, the project aims to make this essential service more accessible.
The mill is now officially open for business!
To celebrate its opening and introduce the service to local residents, the team offered free maize grinding. After visiting nearby homes to spread the word, they were encouraged to see community members arriving in large numbers.
A Sustainable Approach to Fighting Hunger
One of the most promising aspects of the maize mill is its potential to support local food assistance programs.
Rather than relying entirely on monetary payments, the mill can accept a portion of the ground maize as payment for its services. This collected maize meal can then be directed toward helping feed people experiencing food insecurity.
This approach creates an opportunity for the mill to serve the community in two ways: providing an essential service while generating food resources that can be shared with families in need.
Turning Byproducts Into Agricultural Resources
The ministry is also exploring how the maize mill can support sustainable agriculture.
When maize is processed, it produces maize bran, a byproduct that can be used in making an organic fertilizer known locally as Mbeya fertilizer.
By combining maize bran with chicken litter and ash, the ministry hopes to produce fertilizer that can support local agricultural efforts.
Plans are underway to establish a fertilizer production facility on the property surrounding the maize mill.
This would allow the ministry to make practical use of milling byproducts while helping improve soil fertility and support future crop production.
Growing Food for Future Feeding Programs
The ministry's vision extends beyond the mill itself.
Plans are being developed to cultivate land surrounding the facility, with an initial focus on growing maize and beans.
These crops are intended to help support a planned orphan feeding program, which Circle J Ministries hopes to launch in January in partnership with East Texas’ Texas Baptist Hope for Children. TBHC helps provide resources, funding, and training to churches, orphanages, and social workers.
The ministry also operates a separate farm near Mzuzu in Malawi's Northern Region. That farm helps supplement its existing widows program, providing another connection between local agriculture and community care.
Together, these efforts reflect a broader goal: developing practical, locally supported ways to provide food, strengthen communities, and care for vulnerable children and families.
Building for the Future
As the maize mill begins serving the community, Circle J Ministries looks forward to developing the surrounding property and expanding its agricultural initiatives.
Future plans include establishing a fertilizer production facility, expanding food production to support feeding programs, and constructing a secure perimeter around the property. We intend this project to serve as a pilot that can be replicated in other regions of Malawi. Each step is part of a long-term strategy to increase the ministry’s sustainability and better respond to local needs.
We are grateful for everyone who has helped bring this project to life and for the community members who have already welcomed the new mill.
What begins with a single maize mill has the potential to grow into something much greater: a lasting resource for nourishment, opportunity, and hope.
Thank you for supporting the ongoing work of Circle J Ministries in Malawi.
