How a community of women in Malawi is creating opportunities for themselves, their families, and one another.
A Community Built on Shared Experience
Hope for Widows in Malawi was founded by Amess Nthala, who lost her husband when she was just 26 years old.
Through her own experience, Amess understood the challenges that widowhood could bring, particularly for women responsible for raising children and supporting their households.
She began bringing widows together for fellowship, encouragement, and practical assistance.
Over time, those gatherings developed into an organization committed to supporting women spiritually, socially, and economically.
Rather than defining women by what they had lost, Hope for Widows focused on their abilities, their ambitions, and the futures they wanted to build.
Learning, Working, and Growing Together
One of the organization's early initiatives involved teaching women practical skills such as sewing and knitting.
With access to equipment, materials, and instruction, the women began producing school sweaters, uniforms, and other handmade goods.
The work created opportunities to develop income-generating skills while also meeting needs within their communities.
Creating Opportunities Beyond the Sewing Room
The organization's work has never been limited to one activity.
In May 2020, Hope for Widows shared that a group of 11 women had received sponsorship to begin small businesses. Even amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the women were operating businesses in their communities and helping provide for their families.
Over the years, Hope for Widows has also pursued temporary housing for newly widowed women, educational support for children, and additional vocational opportunities.
Its tailoring program has continued to attract support from other organizations, including Malawi Collective, which has helped showcase handmade products and bring attention to the women's work.
These efforts reflect a broader understanding of what support can look like: friendship, training, shared resources, and opportunities to build economic independence.
The Importance of Working Together
The story of Hope for Widows is also a story of relationships.
Local leaders, trainers, churches, volunteers, and partner organizations have contributed different resources and skills over the years.
Circle J Ministries has been one of those partners, helping provide sewing materials, equipment, and small-business support alongside individuals and church groups, including women from First Baptist Church in Rusk, Texas.
Each contribution has been part of an effort led by Amess and the women of Hope for Widows themselves.
The organization's growth is a reminder that meaningful community work rarely happens through the efforts of any one person or group. It develops through relationships built over time, a willingness to listen, and people working toward shared goals.
A Story That Continues
Today, Hope for Widows in Malawi has grown beyond its early sewing initiatives to include programs supporting children, education, vocational development, and women's economic opportunities.
Yet the spirit of its work remains closely connected to those early gatherings: women coming together, sharing what they know, and creating possibilities for one another.
The sewing machines, school uniforms, and small businesses are individual parts of that story.
At its heart are the women who continue to shape it.
Nurturing the Next Generation
Hope for Widows' commitment to strengthening families extends to the children growing up within these communities.
Recognizing the connection between nutrition and education, the organization has developed a feeding program to help children who may otherwise struggle to receive regular meals. For families facing food insecurity, a meal before or after school can make a meaningful difference in a child's ability to concentrate, learn, and participate in the classroom.
As of November 2025, the program was providing meals twice a week, with the hope of eventually offering them daily.
The women and their partners are also exploring ways to make the program more sustainable. With support from Circle J, Every Village A Church, Meadowdale Baptist Church, Widow 2 Widow Ministry, and more, Hope for Widows began cultivating land to grow food for the program, particularly to help families through the difficult months of December, January, and February.
In September, founder Amess Nthala shared that the Hope for Widows Center had begun harvesting tomatoes and onions to help supply the feeding program.
Beyond meeting immediate needs, the organization is creating opportunities for children to learn, play, and grow in confidence. Its preschool program combines early childhood education with enrichment activities such as ballet and gymnastics, encouraging children to develop new skills and express themselves.
During an International Widows Day celebration, preschool students even performed before a large audience, joined on the dance floor by Malawi's Minister of Gender, Mary Navicha.
These programs reflect the organization's growing commitment to the well-being of entire families—supporting women as they build livelihoods while helping children access the nourishment, education, and experiences they need to thrive.
Looking Ahead: Building a Place of Worship
As Hope for Widows continues to grow, its vision for the future is growing alongside it.
The organization recently shared another meaningful milestone: the beginning of construction on a house of worship at the Hope for Widows Center.
After gathering to pray over the land, the team began laying the foundation, with quarry stones, bricks, 50 tonnes of sand, and an initial 100 bags of cement prepared for construction.
For a ministry rooted in faith, fellowship, and community, the project represents another step in creating a place where people can gather, worship, and encourage one another.
Amess and the Hope for Widows community shared their confidence in God's provision, writing:
"We believe that the God who has started this good work in us will carry it to completion!"
From the early days of women gathering for encouragement and learning new skills to the many programs taking shape today, Hope for Widows continues to grow through the dedication of its local leaders and the support of friends and partners near and far.
As this next chapter begins, we invite you to join us in praying for Amess, the women of Hope for Widows, and the successful completion of their new place of worship.
